「Jihye, On Nights I Walk Alone」Yourmind, 2021
These notes were compiled from entries written between September and December 2019.
「September」
I’ll take care of the potted plant that was here. If you want to know how it is doing, please contact me. (p. 1)
「Brushing My Teeth」
With my toothbrush in my mouth, I glanced now and then at the books I had left in one corner of the room. If I keep putting things off, what will be left in the end? I already know how heavy life becomes when too many things piles up, and how uneasy it feels to live while seeing them continue to accumulate, yet choosing to cover them up. (p. 9)
「Overcast Sky」
There were many things that are not important, yet still necessary. So for a moment, I rested my chin in my hand and hesitated. (p. 13)
「Breakfast and Lunch」
I had completely forgotten what day it was or what time it was. I had fallen asleep at some unknown hour the night before, and when I opened my eyes, it was already 4:30 in the afternoon. Half the day had already passed. I wondered if it was okay to live like this, and for a moment, I also thought that living this way felt comfortable enough to continue. During that time, I kept sleeping, got up to wash my face quickly, and made meals by boiling pasta or cooking curry. After that, I would lie back down on the bed, play a movie, open a book for a moment, and only start working on overdue tasks at dawn. If I fell asleep while working, I would wake again around this same hour the next afternoon.
Some days, when I opened my eyes, the sun was already setting outside. Occasionally, a delivery person rang our doorbell. Just when I thought, Have they gone?, I would hear a few knocks. When I heard the dull thud of a package dropping in front of the door, only then would I think, They’ve gone. I lay there in silence, like a coat thrown onto the bed. It was last winter when I moved here. Unlike my previous home at the end of an alley, this house is on a main road, so the sounds of the neighborhood are very loud. Even when I do not want to hear them. My room’s window faces the street, so the sounds come through even louder and clearer. At night, I often hear people drunkenly singing breakup songs at the top of their lungs, couples fighting in anger, or groups of people passing by laughing together. They were the sounds of people living. When was the last time I cried and laughed like that while talking with friends? Because a strange epidemic made it difficult to see friends face to face, I talked with them on the phone more often, but otherwise the days were mostly quiet.
With that thought, I left a message for Yoon, barely got up, and drank some cold water. I pulled the delivery box left outside the door inside. It was the shampoo I had ordered the evening before. (pp. 23–24)
「Shoes Worn with the Heel Crushed」
You live in whatever way feels most comfortable to you, according to your own habits. (p. 49)
