「Shapes of the unintended」 Dain Shin, TACT, Single channel video 5:49, 2024
I remember the day I received an artwork and returned home with it. I placed the work I had been holding on the table and looked at it for a long time. Some days, I looked at it in passing, and on other days, I moved closer and observed it carefully. The indentations pressed into the surface were deeply carved, and I tried placing my own fingertips on them.
Each indentation had a different shape. Countless movements must have been repeated to create all these indentations. Thinking that all of those motions were contained within the indentations, the work began to feel like a living being. Whether a person or an object, do we all move and change little by little each day, forming our own lives? Holding that feeling at the center, I looked closely at the objects, landscapes, and lives of the people around me.
From afar, from up close, against the wall, lying flat on the ground. Gradually, the surroundings grew quiet, and the single presence I was looking at came fully into view. Its width and scale, its shape, and its way of existing… Nothing was the same, yet everything was quietly connected.
It moves.
